EcoWalks are shorter walks which start and finish at the same trailhead and explore the wonderful biodiversity of the Shannon Region. The Eco Walks in the region, details of which can be found below, take the walker on a delightful journey through areas of old woodland, stunning nature, and small villages.
In the woods at Knockbarron one of the finest and most intact esker systems to be found anywhere in Ireland is preserved. This tells the fascinating story of how these landforms came to be at the very end of the last Ice Age.
The Silver River is a very special place from a geological viewpoint, because along it course you will find one of the finest rock exposures in the whole of Slieve Bloom. The Old Red Sandstone can be seen in a splendid, almost continuous section along the river both below and above the village.
The Glenbarrow EcoWalk heads up the valley at the last footbridge onto the ridge of Capard passing the Metal Man. The Ridge of Capard offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape and is well worth a visit. As well as this the stops along the way are very informative on environmental and cultural/historic matters.
