Distance: 80km
Services: Shannonbridge, Shannon Harbour, Banagher, Portumna, Terryglass, Dromineer, Garrykennedy, Scarriff and Ballina/Killaloe
To Suit: From beginners to advanced paddlers
From the start of this trail, at Shannonbridge the Shannon River meanders its way through monastic settlements and charming countryside, where a short and sheltered option of over 15km leads to Banagher in Co. Offaly. A more adventurous option from Shannonbridge journeys past Banagher and on to Dromineer in Co. Tipperary, a distance of Approximately 60km. Canoeists should be aware of changing water conditions at Meelick Weir, which is located approximately 8km downstream of Banagher. There is a walkway over the weir and canoeists can portage around the weir.
At Lough Derg there are several shorter routes including Dromineer to Garrykennedy (5.8km), and Mountshannon to Scarriff (7.5km). From these locations you can journey on to the southern most point of Lough Derg and the end point of this trail – the twin towns of Killaloe/Ballina, which is a distance of 15.2km and 17km from Garrykennedy and Scarriff respectively.
Essential Information! Killaloe Bridge is fitted with eel nets etc. and only the navigation arch is usable for boats.
