Surfing Trails in County Clare

Whether you want to catch your first wave, are taking your surfing to the next level or want to enjoy a surf holiday, County Clare in Ireland’s Shannon Region offers a range of great surfing spots for the total beginner to the experienced big-wave rider.

Surfing

Clare’s Atlantic coastline is one of the most prolific and beautiful surfing backdrops in the northern hemisphere, if not the world. The breathtaking coast and world-class waves have made the area star in the world of surfing and windsurfing, and have swept Ireland into the elite group of surfing's big wave destinations alongside Hawaii and California. For the past few years the world's amateur surfers and best professionals alike have flocked to surf Clare’s rugged coastline and enjoy the hospitality of the Irish.


County Clare is blessed with quality surf spots and some uncrowded areas which means that you will get the best out of your surf trip. What’s more, the area provides surfers with a combination of beaches, reefs and points to suit all abilities. So it’s a great place to get up on that board for the first time as well as offering experienced surfers perfect surf conditions for performing cut backs and 360s!


Key surf locations include Lahinch, Fanore, Doonbeg,  Doolin and Spanish Point, and each beach is surrounded by breathtaking scenery, tourist towns, cozy pubs and ancient ruins, all within comfortable driving distance.

Lahinch Surfing

Lahinch has been a centre for surfing in Ireland since the late 1960s. The two-mile long beach in Lahinch with its variety of breaks caters for novice, intermediate and experienced surfers. 5 miles further south you will find Spanish Point, another perfect surfing beach.

Fanore Surfing

Fanore, also one of County Clare’s award winning ‘blue flag’ beaches, offers uncrowded waves and is a great location for a surf trip. The beach, which is surrounded by immense and breathtaking scenery, is located close to the heart of the Burren area, and boasts the delicate limestone cliffs that the area is renowned for. With a beach-break wave Fanore is a great surfing spot for beginners.

Doolin Surfing

As well as being renowned for its stunning scenery, Doolin is also a famous surfing area in County Clare, with massive surf crashing in off the Atlantic. And there’s much more to savour in this perfect surfing location…Doolin is renowned for its wealth of traditional Irish music, beautiful coastline, historic sites and friendly atmosphere, all of which make it a great place for the perfect surfing trip!

Doonbeg Surfing

Located 12kms from Kilkee, Doonbeg village is situated around the remains of Doonbeg castle, which was built in the 15/16th century. Some picturesque spots are in the village along the Doonbeg River and across the remains of the old castle. There are two fantastic surf spots, Killard and Doonbeg Castle, located just minutes from the village of Doonbeg.

Spanish Point Surfing

Located 2.5kms west of Milltown Malbay and 8kms further south of Lahinch, Spanish Point, a small seaside resort in County Clare, boasts a beach which is famous among surfers for its impressive waves, rolling in from the majestic Atlantic Ocean.
