Set up in 1959 to promote Shannon International Airport in the post-jet era, Shannon Development is today, Ireland’s only dedicated regional economic development company. The Company’s brief is to drive regional economic development in the wider Shannon area, known as the Shannon Region. This covers an area of some 10,000 square kilometres spanning counties Clare, Limerick, North Tipperary, South Offaly and North Kerry, which collectively have a population of over 450,000 people.

The Company’s key role is to lead and drive the broader regional economic development of the Shannon Region across all areas of economic activity working in partnership with the people of the Shannon Region, government, other public bodies and the private sector.

Shannon Development’s goals are:

• To enable the more developed areas of the Shannon Region achieve their full development potential.
• To ensure that the potential of the less developed areas of the Shannon Region is realised.
• To create demand for the Shannon Airport Gateway
• To deliver on a new vision for tourism in the Shannon Region.
