The following information, which includes checklists and links to weather services, will help you in planning your next walking or cycling trail in Ireland's Shannon Region.


Walking and cycling safety tips, checklists and helpful information when embarking on a walking or cycling route or trail in Ireland's Shannon Region which covers counties Limerick, Clare, North Tipperary and South Offaly.


Walking and Cycling - Checklist

1. Have an up-to-date map guide.

2. Check the weather forecast and be prepared for changing weather conditions. Contact Weather Dial on 1550 123 851 or Met Éireann, the Irish National Meteorological Service.  

3. Ensure you have the fitness, clothing and equipment needed for the route you choose. Be sure to have sturdy walking boots, warm hat and gloves, waterproof over-trousers a whistle, a torch, a first aid kit – and a rucksack to carry them!

4. Bring food and a warm/hydrating drink with you.

5. Leave details of your plans with somebody, including the time you will be returning, and contact that person when you return.

6. Bring emergency telephone numbers with you.

7. Make accommodation plans if you are planning to participate in a multi-day trail.

 

A few more important safety tips...

 1.Allow plenty of time for your walk/cycle, and plan to finish your walk/cycle well before dark.

2. If in a group, stay together and watch out for each other. Take regular breaks and be guided by the pace of the slowest walker/cyclist.

3. Be aware of traffic when walking/cycling on roads.

4. Know where you are at all times. Pay attention to the markings on walking and cycling routes and use a mapguide to keep track of your location.

Cyclists should also take note to...

1. Remember to always cycle on the left hand side of the road.

2. Wear a helmet. Although you do not legally have to, we would stongly advise that you bring your own or rent a helmet while here.

3. Remember that rain will make your brakes less effective, so take care especially when going downhill.  

4. Have a sturdy lock and to secure your bicycle, even  if you are only leaving it for a short time.

5. If there is traffic behind you keep your course, straight and predictable. If you are causing a traffic jam behind, you could pull into the side for a moment and let it pass you by.
